How to check if a .com.my domain is available to register

Before you register a .com.my name, look it up on MYNIC's WHOIS or domain search page. MYNIC runs every web address that ends in .my, and names go to whoever registers first. If the search shows the name is free, register it through a MYNIC registrar soon. If it shows a record, someone owns it, and you need another name or another ending.

Where do I check a .my domain name?

MYNIC has two free tools on its own site:

  • The domain search at mynic.my/domain-search. Type the name and it tells you if it can be registered.
  • The WHOIS page at mynic.my/whois. Type the full name with its ending, for example yourcompany.com.my. If the name is taken, WHOIS shows its record.

Always type the full ending. yourcompany.my, yourcompany.com.my and yourcompany.biz.my are three separate names, and each one can belong to a different owner.

What does the WHOIS result tell me?

For a registered name, MYNIC shows the dates it was created, when it expires and when it was last changed, its status, which registrar manages it, and its name servers. Personal contact details are hidden under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, so you will not see the owner's phone number or email.

The expiry date is useful. A name that expires next month is still owned until then, and the owner can renew it. Do not plan your launch around a name you do not hold yet.

What if the .com.my I want is taken?

You have a few honest options:

  1. Try another ending. If the .com.my is gone, check the .my and .biz.my versions. MYNIC says .biz.my is meant for commercial activities and small businesses.
  2. Change the name a little. Add your town or what you do, for example yourcompanyjb.com.my or yourcompanytravel.com.my. Keep it short and easy to say over the phone.
  3. Ask the owner. MYNIC has a Domain Contact Request form on its WHOIS page. You can use it if you want to buy the name. MYNIC sends your message to the owner without showing you their details, and the owner may or may not reply.
  4. Check for a trade mark problem. If someone uses your registered brand to mislead people, that same form covers trade mark complaints. For legal steps, speak to a lawyer.

MYNIC also offers some short names, city names and popular words as premium domain names, with their own page on the MYNIC site. If the name you want is one of those, ask your registrar how it works before you plan around it.

Which documents will MYNIC ask for?

A .com.my is for commercial organisations. MYNIC asks for company or business registration papers: for a Sdn Bhd, the SSM certificate such as Borang 9 or Borang 13. For a sole proprietor or partnership, Borang D. In Sabah and Sarawak, a trading licence under the Commercial License Ordinance (Borang B). Keep a clear PDF ready before you search, so you can register the same day. Our guide on how to register a .my domain for your business lists the documents in full.

What to do

  1. Write down two or three names you like before you start. Our post on how to choose a business domain name helps with this.
  2. Search each one on MYNIC's domain search, with the .com.my, .my and .biz.my endings.
  3. For any name that shows a record, open WHOIS and note the expiry date and status.
  4. Pick the free name you like best and get your SSM document ready.
  5. Register it through a MYNIC registrar in your company's name, with an email address the company controls. Our guide on who owns your business domain explains why.
  6. Still unsure about the ending? Read .com.my, .my or .com: which to choose.
