How to choose a business domain name in Malaysia

How to choose a business domain name in Malaysia

A good business domain is short, easy to spell when you say it over the phone, and close to your company or brand name. Before you register, check two things: that the name follows MYNIC's rules for .my names, and that nobody already holds a trade mark on it in MyIPO's database. Then register it in your company's name.

Should I use my company name or my brand name?

MYNIC lets a business register its company name, a brand name, a product name or a trade mark. Most small firms use the name customers already know. If your SSM name is "Tan Brothers Trading Sdn Bhd" but every customer calls you "TB Hardware", tbhardware.com.my is easier to remember and type.

Leave out "Sdn Bhd" and words like "enterprise" unless you need them to tell yourself apart from another firm. Every extra word is one more thing to type into an email address.

How long can a .my domain name be?

MYNIC allows 1 to 40 characters before the ending, but shorter works better. Aim for something a customer can read off a van or a business card and type correctly the first time. As a rough test, say the name to a colleague and ask them to write it down. If they ask "how do you spell that?", keep looking.

Also check how the words run together. Two harmless words can form a different word when written as one, so read the joined name slowly before you pay for it.

Can I use hyphens or numbers?

Yes. MYNIC accepts the letters a to z, the digits 0 to 9 and the hyphen. A hyphen can only sit between words, never at the start or end. Spaces, highlights, dots and the "&" sign are not allowed, so "Tan & Sons" has to become tansons or tan-sons.

Hyphens are legal but awkward. People forget them, and mail sent to the version without the hyphen goes to someone else. If you use a hyphenated name, register the plain version too and point it to the same site.

Numbers raise the same question: is it "3" or "three"? If your brand uses a number, buy both spellings.

Which words does MYNIC not allow?

MYNIC's guidelines block some names on their own, including:

  • country and state names such as "Malaysia", "Johor" or "Melaka", unless the state authority applies
  • words linked to the main religions, the government or the royal family
  • obscene or offensive words
  • words such as "bank", "insurance" or "takaful", which need Bank Negara Malaysia's written approval first

MYNIC says it does not check whether a name is suitable or whether it uses someone else's rights. That job falls on you.

How do I check for trade marks?

MyIPO, the Malaysian intellectual property office, runs an online search on its IP Online service. Search your planned name and close spellings of it. If another business has registered that mark for similar goods or services, a domain using it can lead to a MYNIC domain dispute (MYDRP) or a legal letter, and you could lose the name after you have printed it everywhere.

If the name is free and it is your main brand, ask a trade mark agent or lawyer whether to register it as a trade mark yourself. MyIPO says a registration lasts ten years and can be renewed. This guide is general information only; check with a lawyer for your own case.

Which ending should I pick?

We compared .com.my, .my and .com in an earlier guide: Domain registration Malaysia: .com.my, .my or .com?. In short, most local firms use .com.my and also register the same name on .my or .com so nobody else takes it.

What to do

  1. Write down three to five name ideas: your company name, your brand and a short version.
  2. Say each one out loud to someone and ask them to type it. Drop the ones they get wrong.
  3. Check each name against MYNIC's rules above. Remove spaces, "&" and leading or trailing hyphens.
  4. Search MyIPO IP Online for trade marks on the same or similar names.
  5. Search the domain on your registrar's site. If it is free, register it straight away, in the company's name and not a staff member's.
  6. Buy the obvious spare versions (the .my or .com, the version with or without a hyphen) and point them to your main site.
