Domain registration Malaysia: .com.my, .my or .com?
- Mynic
- Domain renewal
For most Malaysian companies the answer is .com.my, with the matching .my or .com bought as a spare. A .com.my needs your SSM form and tells Google and customers you are a Malaysian business. A .my is open to anyone. A .com suits companies that sell overseas. Whichever you pick, register it in the company's name.
What is the difference between .com.my, .my and .com?
| .com.my | .my | .com | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | MYNIC, the Malaysian registry | MYNIC | Verisign, a US registry |
| Who can register | Commercial organisations | Individuals and organisations from any country | Anyone |
| Documents | SSM form (Borang 9, 13 or D) | MyKad, passport or a business licence | None |
| What Google reads | Site is for Malaysia | Site is for Malaysia | No country |
| Best for | Local companies and shops | Short names, personal brands | Exporters, regional brands |
All three work the same way for a website and for email. The ending changes how the name looks and who may hold it, not how fast your site loads.
Does the domain ending affect Google ranking in Malaysia?
Google says a country ending such as .my is a strong signal that a site is meant for that country. So a .com.my or .my site has a small head start in Malaysian searches. A .com site can still rank here, but Google then relies on other clues, such as your address, language and Google Business Profile.
The ending is one signal among many. Useful pages, a fast site and real reviews matter far more. If you sell only in Malaysia, a .com.my keeps things clear. If half your buyers are in Singapore or abroad, a .com avoids looking local only.
Which one should a small business choose?
- Sdn Bhd or enterprise selling in Malaysia: .com.my. It matches your SSM name and customers trust it.
- The .com.my you want is taken: try the same name on .my, or a short version of the name on .com.my.
- Selling overseas or planning to: .com, and keep the .com.my so nobody else takes it.
- Freelancer or personal brand: .my, which needs only your MyKad.
Pick one main domain for your website and email. Point the spare ones to it so visitors who type the other ending still find you.
What happens to email if I change domains later?
Every staff email address ends with the domain, so a later switch means new addresses, new business cards and telling every client. Old addresses must keep working for months so you do not lose orders. It is cheaper to choose well now and register the spares at the same time.
What to do
- Search your company name on .com.my, .my and .com today. Names go first come, first served.
- Have your SSM form ready as a PDF before you order a .com.my.
- Register the domain in the company's name, with a company email address as the contact.
- Set the renewal to automatic, or put the expiry date in your calendar with two reminders.
- Pick one main domain for the website and email, and point the others to it.
