How to register a .my domain for your business in Malaysia
- Mynic
- Domain renewal
To register a .my or .com.my domain, you choose the ending that fits your business, check that the name is free, and send the supporting documents MYNIC asks for, usually your SSM registration form. Names go first come, first served. Register the domain in the company's own name and keep the contact details up to date, so you never lose control of it.
Which ending should my business use?
MYNIC runs every domain that ends in .my. The main choices for a business are:
- .com.my is for commercial organisations. This is the usual choice for a Malaysian company or registered business.
- .my is open to individuals, companies and organisations from any country.
- .biz.my is for commercial organisations and MSMEs.
- .org.my is for societies and other organisations registered with the Registrar of Societies.
- .net.my is for network-related organisations.
Some companies register both the .com.my and the .my version of their name, so that nobody else can take the other one.
What documents does MYNIC ask for?
For .com.my and .biz.my, MYNIC asks for proof that the business is registered:
- A company under the Companies Act 2016: the SSM certificate, such as Borang 9 for a private limited company, or Borang 13 after a change of name.
- A business under the Business Registration Act 1956: Borang D.
- A business in Sabah or Sarawak under the Commercial License Ordinance 1948: Borang B.
For a .my domain in a person's name, a Malaysian sends a MyKad copy. MYNIC asks you to draw two diagonal lines across the front of the card and write "For .my domain Use Only" between them, without covering the name, photo or IC number.
What to do
- Search the name on your registrar's site or the MYNIC domain search. If it is free, register it before someone else does.
- Put the company as the registrant, not your web designer, an agent or a staff member's personal name.
- Set the administrative contact to a person who works for your company. MYNIC says this contact must be an authorised employee of the registrant. Use a company email address that will still be read if that person leaves.
- Note the expiry date and pay the renewal early. MYNIC says a change of registrant or a move to another registrar can only be submitted before the domain expires. Once it lapses, your website and every email address on that domain stop working.
- Keep a copy of the SSM form and the registration number, which you need for payments and changes.
