Domain registration vs web hosting: do you need both?
- Mynic
- Domain renewal
A domain name and web hosting are two separate things that you usually pay for separately. The domain is the address people type, such as yourcompany.com.my. Hosting is the server space that holds your website files and, often, your company email. If you want a website or email on your own name, you need both, and each one has its own renewal date.
What does a domain name do?
Every computer on the internet has a number, called an IP address. ICANN explains that domain names exist so people can use an easy name instead of that number. Registering a domain gives your business the right to use that name for a set period, usually one year or more, through a registrar.
For .my names, MYNIC runs the registry and you buy through one of its accredited registrars. MYNIC's own guide shows that the domain record holds a few things you should know about:
- The registrant: the person or company that holds the domain.
- The contacts: administrative, technical and billing.
- The nameservers, which connect the domain to a website.
A domain on its own shows nothing. Until its nameservers point somewhere, visitors see an error page and email to that name has nowhere to go.
What does web hosting do?
Hosting is the computer that stores your website and answers when someone visits it. A hosting plan usually includes disk space for the site, a database for WordPress or a shop, an SSL certificate for the padlock, and mailboxes for your staff.
You can move hosting without changing your domain. You can also renew the domain with one company and keep hosting with another. They just need to be linked through the nameservers or DNS records.
Do I need both?
| You want | Domain | Hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a name for later | Yes | No |
| A website on your own name | Yes | Yes |
| Email like sales@yourcompany.com.my | Yes | Yes, or a separate email service |
| Only a Facebook page or Shopee shop | Not needed | Not needed |
If you only need email, read our guide on whether you need separate email hosting.
What goes wrong when the two are mixed up?
A common problem is a website and email going down together because the domain expired, even though the hosting was paid. The opposite also happens: the domain renews, but the hosting lapses and the site disappears. Paying one bill does not renew the other.
ICANN reminds registrants that they must keep their contact details accurate and answer their registrar. If renewal notices go to an old staff email, nobody sees them.
What to do
- Write down where your domain is registered and where your hosting is. They may be the same company or two different ones.
- Note both renewal dates in the company calendar, with a reminder one month before.
- Check the domain is registered in the company's name. Our guide on checking who owns your business domain shows how.
- Make sure the renewal emails for both go to a shared office address, not one person.
