Domain price in Malaysia: what changes the yearly cost

Domain price in Malaysia: what changes the yearly cost

A domain name in Malaysia is a yearly bill, not a one-time purchase. What you pay depends on the ending you pick (.my, .com.my or .com), the company you buy it from, how many years you pay in advance and whether you renew on time. Renew late and you may pay a redemption fee on top of the normal renewal.

Who sets the price of a .my domain?

MYNIC is the registry for every address that ends in .my, including .com.my and .biz.my. Most businesses do not buy from MYNIC itself. They buy through one of MYNIC's appointed registrars, and each registrar sets its own selling price. That is why the same .com.my name can be quoted at different prices by different companies. MYNIC's own buying page also says its listed prices do not include the 8% Service Tax, so expect tax on the invoice.

Does .com.my cost more to get than .my?

Each ending asks for different papers, and that can hold up an order.

Ending Who can register it What you need
.my Anyone, from any country IC or passport, or a company licence
.com.my Commercial organisations SSM papers such as Borang 9, 13 or D
.biz.my Businesses and MSMEs SSM papers, as for .com.my
.com Anyone No Malaysian papers

If your SSM papers are not ready, a .com.my order waits until they are. Have a clear copy before you order.

Why can the first year be cheaper than the renewal?

Some sellers give a low price for the first year to win the order. The renewal price is what you pay every year after that, so it matters more. When you compare quotes, ask for both numbers in writing, with tax included.

Can I pay for several years at once?

Yes. MYNIC allows a .my domain to be registered or renewed for at least 1 year and up to 10 years. Paying for a few years means fewer renewal dates to miss.

What happens if I renew late?

MYNIC describes these stages after the expiry date:

  1. Auto renew grace period, up to 45 days: The length depends on your registrar. You can still renew at the normal price, but your website and email may already be suspended.
  2. Redemption grace period, 30 days: The domain is put on hold, so your website and company email stop working. To get it back you pay a redemption fee plus one year of renewal. The fee varies between registrars.
  3. Pending delete, 5 days: Nobody can restore the domain any more.
  4. Deleted: The name is open for anyone to register, first come, first served.

What to do

  1. Look up your domain on the MYNIC WHOIS page to see your registrar and expiry date.
  2. Make sure the registrant is your company, not a former staff member or web designer.
  3. Keep the contact email on the domain up to date, because renewal reminders go there.
  4. Ask your registrar for the renewal price in writing, with Service Tax.
  5. Renew at least a month before expiry, or pay for two or three years at once.
