Domain expired? How to get your business domain back
- Domain renewal
- Mynic
- Icann
If your business domain has expired, you can usually still get it back, but the clock is running. A .my or .com.my domain can be renewed at the normal price for up to 45 days after expiry. After that it costs more, and after about 80 days it can be lost for good. Contact the company that registered it today and pay the renewal.
What stops working when a domain expires?
Your domain name is the address for both your website and your email. When it lapses, the registrar can switch it off. Visitors see an error page, and email sent to your company addresses starts to fail. Most mail servers keep trying for a while, then send the email back to the sender as undelivered. Your staff may not notice at first, because old emails are still in their inbox.
How long do I have to renew a .my or .com.my domain?
MYNIC, the body that runs .my domains, sets out these stages after the expiry date:
| Stage | How long | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Auto renew grace period | Up to 45 days, set by your registrar | Renew at the normal price. The domain may still work or may already be suspended. |
| Redemption grace period | 30 days | The domain is suspended and website and email stop. You can still renew, but you pay a redemption fee on top of one year's renewal. |
| Pending delete | 5 days | Nobody can restore it, not even you. |
| Deleted | After that | Anyone can register the name, first come, first served. |
The grace period depends on the registrar, so ask yours for the exact date.
What about .com, .net and other global domains?
For .com and similar endings, ICANN rules apply. Your registrar must remind you about a month and about a week before expiry, and again shortly after. Once a domain is deleted, the registry keeps it in a 30-day redemption period, during which only you can buy it back, usually with an extra fee. How long you have before deletion depends on your registrar.
What to do
- Find out who your registrar is. For .my domains, search your name on the MYNIC WHOIS page. For .com, any WHOIS lookup shows the registrar.
- Contact them and renew. If the person who registered it has left the company, ask for an ownership or contact update first.
- After paying, give it a few hours. The website and email usually come back once the internet's address records refresh.
- Ask important contacts to resend anything they sent while the domain was down. Some of it was returned to them.
- Turn on auto-renew, renew for two or more years, and put the expiry date in your company calendar.
- Check that the contact email on the domain is one you read and that it is not on the same domain. Reminders sent to an address on an expired domain never arrive.
