Google Analytics Data Manager: see where your website data goes

Google Analytics Data Manager: see where your website data goes

Google Analytics now has a Data Manager page, in beta. Find it in Admin, under "My preferences". One map shows where your data comes from, such as your website tag, an ads account or an uploaded file, and where it goes. Broken links get a red mark and a Fix button. If you track enquiries or run ads, open it and look for red marks.

What does Data Manager show?

It is meant as one home page for the data streams and linked products of an Analytics property. The connection map has four columns:

  • Data sources: where data comes from, for example Google Tag Manager, a CRM, a Google Ads link or an offline file you upload.
  • Data types: what kind of import each source uses, if any.
  • Property and streams: your website and app streams inside Google Analytics.
  • Data export: the products that receive data from your property.

Hover over any box and the map highlights its whole path from source to destination. Click a box for a summary card. A list under the map shows your data streams and connected products, with buttons to add a stream or connect a new product.

Data Manager also includes a "data strength" guide that points out gaps in your measurement and suggests fixes.

Is there anything to watch out for?

Google warns against setting up the same data connection in both Analytics and Google Ads, because conversions can then be counted twice. Data you bring in through Data Manager flows on to your linked ads account, but not the other way round. If your ads agency already set up an import inside Google Ads, leave it there and do not add a second copy in Analytics.

Your existing imports show up in Data Manager by themselves. Sub-properties and roll-up properties do not have the Data Manager page yet.

What this means for you

  1. Log in to Analytics, open Admin and click Data Manager in the left menu. You need the right permissions on the property to see it.
  2. Look at the small map first. A red mark or a broken box means that connection has a problem.
  3. Click the broken box and read the card. If it offers a Fix button and you understand the issue, use it. If not, send a screenshot to whoever set up your tracking.
  4. Check that your website stream is there and shows data. If it is missing or empty, ask your web designer to check the tracking tag on your site.
  5. If you run Google Ads, ask your agency whether conversions are imported in the ads account or in Analytics, and keep only one.

Planning a new website? Ask our web design team in Malaysia to include the tracking tag from the start, so enquiries are tracked from day one. For online shops, see our e-commerce website design service.
