ChatGPT ads in Malaysia: what businesses should know
- Ad tips
Since 23 September 2026, businesses can advertise inside ChatGPT in Malaysia. OpenAI rolled ChatGPT ads out to Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan on that date. Ads appear only for people using ChatGPT's Free and Go plans. Eligible businesses can buy them themselves through OpenAI's Ads Manager.
How ChatGPT ads work
People use ChatGPT to research and compare before they buy: "best accounting software for a small company", "where to buy durian online". OpenAI says its ads are meant to reach people at exactly that moment, while they explore, compare and decide.
OpenAI's rules for these ads:
- Ads are shown only on the Free and Go plans. People paying for Plus, Pro or Enterprise see no ads.
- Ads are labelled as ads.
- OpenAI says the ads do not change ChatGPT's answers, and it does not sell people's conversations to advertisers.
OpenAI also added a picture ad format and better results tracking on 5 October, and on 21 October said more than 100,000 advertisers had used the platform.
How to buy them
There are three ways, according to OpenAI:
- Ads Manager: self-service for eligible businesses, the same idea as Google or Meta ads, with cost-per-click bidding.
- OpenAI's own Ads Solutions team.
- Agencies and technology partners that already work with OpenAI.
What this means for you
- Treat it as a test, not a replacement for Google or Meta ads. It is new in Malaysia, and there is little local data yet on cost or results.
- It suits businesses whose customers research before buying: services, software, education, travel, B2B products.
- Start with a small daily budget, one product and a clear landing page, then compare cost per lead with your other ads after a month.
- Make sure your landing page loads fast on mobile and has a working contact form or WhatsApp button. Paid clicks are wasted on a slow or broken page.
- Keep your ads truthful and follow Malaysian advertising rules. No fake discounts, no unproven claims.
