WhatsApp Events: invite guests who do not use WhatsApp

WhatsApp Events: invite guests who do not use WhatsApp

WhatsApp is rolling out an update to Events. Invites can now go as a link to people without WhatsApp, who can see the details and RSVP without the app. A new Events page keeps all your events together. For a small business, that makes WhatsApp workable for simple customer events such as a workshop or open day. Update the app and try it.

What is new?

According to Meta's announcement:

  • Invites by link. Create an event, add a cover photo and share the link. Guests can RSVP without a WhatsApp account.
  • One Events page. Go to Settings, then Events, to see every event you created or were invited to.
  • Reminders and plus-ones. You can set your own reminders and let guests bring someone.
  • Privacy. Your phone number is not shown to guests you do not know, and guests without WhatsApp see the event address only after they RSVP.

Meta says the update reaches everyone over the next few weeks, so it may not be on your phone yet.

What this means for your business

If your customers already message you on WhatsApp, this is an easy way to invite them. Being able to invite people who are not on WhatsApp, for example overseas partners or customers who only use email, means one invite can cover everyone.

Keep in mind that this feature is built for personal planning. It does not replace a proper booking or ticketing system if you need payment, seat limits or a list you can export.

What to do

  1. Update WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business from the Play Store or App Store, then check Settings for Events.
  2. Try a small event first, such as a staff lunch, to see how the link and RSVPs look to guests.
  3. For customer events, write the date, time (Malaysia time), place and a contact number in the event details.
  4. Only send invites to customers who have agreed to hear from you, in line with the PDPA.
  5. Post the same event on your website so people searching Google can find it too.

How SyncTech can help

If you run regular workshops or launches, an event page on your own site works alongside WhatsApp. Our web design team in Malaysia can add one to your website.
