Google age checks in Malaysia: if marked under 18
- Tech news
Google is rolling out age assurance in Malaysia, announced on its Malaysia blog on 23 September 2026. It guesses from account activity whether a user is under 18 and then switches on stricter settings. If Google wrongly marks an adult as under 18, the adult can verify their age with an ID photo or a selfie.
How Google's age check works
Google says its system looks at signals already linked to the account, such as the kind of things searched for, and estimates whether the person is likely over or under 18. It says this does not collect any new data.
When the system thinks a user is under 18, Google sends an email and shows notices inside its apps explaining what changed.
What changes for an account marked under 18
- SafeSearch filtering is switched on in Google Search.
- Mature content is blocked in products such as Google Play and Gemini.
- Personalised ads are turned off.
- Location timeline in Google Maps is turned off.
- YouTube turns on "take a break" and bedtime reminders and limits repeated viewing of some kinds of content.
For a teenager this is the intended result. For an adult on a shared or rarely used account, it can block apps or content needed for work.
What to do
- Read the email from Google carefully. Check the sender address before clicking anything, as scammers copy Google emails. When unsure, open the account settings yourself at myaccount.google.com instead of using a link.
- If you are an adult and Google got it wrong, follow its steps to verify your age. Google offers two ways: a photo of a government ID, or a selfie.
- Use the selfie option if you prefer not to upload your MyKad.
- Tell staff about this change, so they know what the real notice looks like and check any link before they sign in.
- Parents: leave the protections on for children's accounts and check the Family Link settings.
