Windows 11 on 8 GB PCs: faster update and how to get it

Windows 11 on 8 GB PCs: faster update and how to get it

Microsoft says a new Windows 11 update makes PCs with 8 GB of memory up to 20% more responsive, with multitasking up to 40% faster in its own lab test. To get it, update to Windows 11 version 26H2, build 26300.9818 or later, and keep Edge, Microsoft 365 and Teams up to date. Office PCs with 8 GB should feel quicker, though heavy work still needs 16 GB.

What has Microsoft changed?

In a Windows Experience blog post on 3 November 2026, Microsoft listed these changes for 8 GB PCs:

  • Start, search, right-click, Settings, Snipping Tool and File Explorer respond up to 20% faster than with the January 2026 update. Windows pauses background jobs such as search indexing while you are working.
  • Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook together use about 360 MB less memory.
  • Widgets now loads only when opened, saving about 200 MB.
  • Edge puts unused tabs to sleep after 15 minutes instead of two hours.
  • On 8 GB machines, Teams may switch Efficiency Mode on by itself and lower camera quality during heavy load to keep the call audio clear.

Microsoft says these figures come from its own tests and telemetry, and results vary by PC.

Does this mean 8 GB is enough for an office PC?

For email, Word, Excel and a browser, an updated 8 GB PC should now cope better. Microsoft itself says demanding work such as 3D modelling, advanced video editing and large data processing benefits from 16 GB or more. Our earlier guide, Office PC RAM in 2026: is 8 GB enough or do you need 16 GB?, still applies when you buy a new PC: 16 GB gives more room for the next four or five years.

The update helps the PCs you already own. It may delay an upgrade for staff whose work is light.

What to do

  1. On each 8 GB PC, open Settings, then Windows Update.
  2. Turn on "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" and select Check for updates.
  3. Install updates until the PC shows version 26H2, build 26300.9818 or later. You can check under Settings, System, About.
  4. Update Microsoft 365 apps, Teams and Edge too. Some of the savings arrive through those apps or the Microsoft Store.
  5. Restart, then ask staff whether switching between apps feels faster. Note any PC that is still slow; it may need more memory or an SSD.
