AWS Semarak AI Malaysia: 6 months of AI tools for SMEs
AWS launched Semarak AI Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on 4 November 2026. Eligible SMEs can get six months of Amazon Quick and Kiro, two AWS AI tools, at no charge after an AI readiness check. AWS runs this part with GD XCHANGE, the GDEX solutions arm, and VSTECS, and aims for 10,000 SMEs by 2028. Interested? Plan a small trial first.
What are Amazon Quick and Kiro?
AWS describes Amazon Quick as "the AI built for work": an assistant for everyday business tasks such as looking through data and pulling information together. Kiro is AWS's AI tool for building software. It turns a request typed in plain language into a written plan for the requirements and design before it writes code. AWS gives one example of a retail SME already using both to track competitor prices and forecast demand.
Who else is in the programme?
The programme has three parts. AI Negara covers the public sector: AWS plans to give Amazon Quick to up to 445,000 government officers through JDN's AI-as-a-Service platform, and GovTech Malaysia is starting a 500-developer pilot with Kiro this year. AI Ekonomi is the SME part described above. AI Rakyat covers polytechnics, community colleges and one adopted school in Kuala Lumpur.
What this means for you
If your business already ships with GDEX, the programme is aimed at you first, since AWS says it builds on the SMEs GDEX already serves in e-commerce, retail and manufacturing. Other SMEs should ask GD XCHANGE or VSTECS how to join. The announcement does not list the full eligibility rules.
Before signing up, think about what you would actually use it for. Good first jobs are ones where a mistake is cheap: summarising sales figures, drafting product descriptions, or sorting customer questions.
What to do
- Pick one or two tasks your team repeats every week and could test with an AI tool.
- Ask GD XCHANGE or VSTECS about the readiness assessment and what data it needs.
- Decide which company data staff may put into AI tools, and write that rule down before the trial starts.
- Mark the end date of the six months in your calendar, and decide by then whether to pay, switch or stop.
- Keep customer personal data out of trials unless you have checked how it is stored. The PDPA still applies.
