Year-end online shop sales: answer buyers' questions first

Year-end shoppers see so many "last chance" offers that many stop reading them. WooCommerce says what helps more is a clear offer, plain answers to buyers' questions, and a short path to checkout. Find where shoppers give up on your online shop, fix one or two of those spots, and put delivery dates and return rules on the product page.

Where are your shoppers giving up?

Your overall conversion rate does not tell you whether people struggle to pick a product, leave the cart or quit at checkout. WooCommerce suggests linking the shop to Google Analytics 4 and turning on tracking for product views, add to cart, checkout started and purchase. A GA4 report then shows how many shoppers move from each step to the next, and you can split it by phone or computer and by where the visitor came from.

If phone buyers finish checkout much less often than computer buyers, test the phone checkout yourself. Look for small form fields, error messages that are easy to miss and payment options that are hard to use.

What should the shop answer before checkout?

  • Make the offer easy to find. A link from a sale email should land on the sale products, with the discount shown, and not on the home page.
  • Show what happens with coupons. If the cart does not qualify, say what is missing. If two codes cannot be combined, say so.
  • Help people choose. A short gift guide that explains who each product suits, with the products beside it, does more than "a great gift for everyone".
  • Put the order-by date for delivery before the holidays, the return window and any free delivery on the product page, near the Add to Cart button.
  • Check that stock on the website matches what you can really send, especially if you also sell on marketplaces or in a shop.

WooCommerce also points out that more shoppers now ask AI assistants for gift ideas, so product descriptions that clearly state budget, size and compatibility help both people and AI tools.

What to do

  1. Turn on guest checkout so first-time buyers do not need an account.
  2. Remove checkout fields you do not need to deliver the order.
  3. Offer the quick payment options your buyers already use.
  4. Make one change at a time, then check the same step again a week later.
