11.11 and year-end sales: discount without losing profit
- Woocommerce
Before you run an 11.11, 12.12 or year-end promotion on your online shop, work out how many extra sales the discount needs just to break even. WooCommerce's own guide shows that a 20% discount on a product with a 50% margin needs about 67% more units sold to earn the same gross profit. Target the offer, set a minimum spend, and measure it afterwards.
Why is a discount more expensive than it looks?
The sum is simple. Take your gross margin, subtract the discount, and divide the discount by what is left. At a 50% margin, 20% off leaves 30% margin, and 20 divided by 30 is about 0.67. That means 67% more units just to stand still, before extra packing, courier and ad costs.
A sitewide sale also reaches people who would have bought at full price. Your bestsellers do not need a markdown to sell.
How do you make a promotion pay for itself?
WooCommerce suggests giving each promotion one clear job, such as winning new buyers, bringing back old ones, growing the basket or clearing slow stock. Then aim it:
- Use the WooCommerce Customers report to find one-time buyers or people who have not ordered in months.
- Use the Products and Stock reports to find slow sellers with plenty of stock, and discount those instead of your bestsellers.
- Give each customer a single-use code, so you can see who used it and what they bought.
- For abandoned carts, send a reminder first and offer a code only to first-time buyers, so regular customers do not learn to leave checkout for a discount.
A minimum spend helps too. A fixed amount off above a set basket value stays the same as the cart grows, while a percentage keeps growing. Set the threshold a little above your usual order value.
What to do
- Write down the margin of each product you plan to discount and do the sum above.
- In the WooCommerce coupon settings, set the minimum spend, limit the products, exclude items already on sale and tick "Individual use only".
- Plan the follow-up email before the sale, so a discounted first order turns into a second order at full price.
- About 60 days later, check Analytics, then Coupons, and compare profit per customer as well as total sales.
