Wi-Fi 8 is here: should your office change its router yet?

ASUS has started shipping the ZenWiFi BN12, which it calls the first Wi-Fi 8 mesh system, and it is expected in Malaysia in early December. Wi-Fi 8 is built for steadier connections more than higher top speeds. Most offices can wait, unless their laptops and phones also support Wi-Fi 8. Fix weak spots and old routers first.
What is different about Wi-Fi 8?
Each Wi-Fi generation until now mainly raised the top speed. ASUS says Wi-Fi 8 (the IEEE 802.11bn standard) focuses on reliability instead: a more even signal when conditions change, better speed in rooms further from the router, and steadier links for small devices at the edge of coverage, such as door sensors and cameras.
It also lets several access points coordinate with each other. In an office with a mesh system, that should mean less interference between nodes and smoother hand-over as people walk between rooms.
What does the ASUS ZenWiFi BN12 offer?
According to ASUS, the BN12 is a tri-band mesh router rated up to 19 Gbps. A two-pack covers up to about 7,000 square feet. Each unit has two 10G and three 2.5G network ports, and it can show interference from other Wi-Fi and non-Wi-Fi sources in its app. Lowyat.NET reports it should reach Malaysia in early December, with no local price announced yet.
Should a small office upgrade now?
For most offices, not yet. Your laptops and phones need Wi-Fi 8 support themselves to get the full benefit, so check their spec sheets first. A new router still works with older devices, but they connect at their own Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 level.
It is worth replacing a router now if:
- it no longer gets security updates from the maker,
- staff lose Wi-Fi in some rooms every day,
- your internet line is faster than the router can handle.
What to do
- Check your router's model and whether the maker still releases updates for it.
- Walk the office with a phone and note the rooms where the signal drops.
- If you need a new router this year, a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 mesh system is usually enough for a small office.
- Keep the router's admin password strong and its firmware up to date, whatever you choose.
