MacBook Pro and iMac with M6: what changes for office

Apple announced a new 14-inch MacBook Pro and a new 24-inch iMac on 27 October 2026, both running its new M6 chip. Pre-orders open on 28 October and the machines reach shops from Friday 6 November. For most offices the real question is whether an older Mac is worth replacing, so here is what changed and how to decide.
What is new in the 14-inch MacBook Pro
- M6 chip with a 12-core processor and 12-core graphics, two more cores each than the M5 model. Apple says graphics are up to 30 percent faster than M5.
- Up to 24 hours of battery life, which Apple calls the longest of any Mac so far.
- 16GB of memory as standard, with 32GB as an option.
- Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, plus Thunderbolt ports, an SD card slot and a headphone jack.
- Same Liquid Retina XDR screen, with an optional anti-glare nano-texture finish.
Apple lists the US starting price as US$1,999, as of 27 October 2026.
What is new in the iMac
- M6 chip in two versions: 10-core and 12-core.
- Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and storage Apple says is up to twice as fast.
- A 2.5 Gigabit wired network port, offered only on the 12-core models.
- Same 24-inch 4.5K screen, seven colours.
US starting prices are US$1,499 for the 10-core model and US$1,699 for the 12-core one, as of 27 October 2026. Check Apple's Malaysian store or an Apple Authorised Reseller for local prices.
Should your office upgrade?
Apple compares the MacBook Pro mostly with the M1 and M5 models, and the iMac with older Intel iMacs. If your staff still use an Intel Mac, the jump is large and worth planning for. For Macs already on a recent Apple chip, there is less reason to rush; replace them when they slow your staff down.
What to do before you buy
- Memory. On Apple chip Macs the memory cannot be added later. For staff who keep many browser tabs, Excel files and video calls open, 16GB is the minimum.
- Storage. Choose enough space for the next four or five years, or plan to keep files on OneDrive, Google Drive or the office NAS.
- Wired network. If the iMac will sit on a desk with a network cable, pick the 12-core model, as only it offers the faster Ethernet port.
- Your software. Ask the makers of your accounting, design or e-Invoice tools whether they support macOS 27 before you move staff over.
- The old Mac. Back it up, sign out of Apple ID and iCloud, and erase it before you sell or hand it on.
