Web hosting Malaysia: how to choose for a small business
- Hosting speed
Good web hosting for a Malaysian small business answers fast, keeps daily backups you can restore, renews SSL by itself, includes email on your own domain and has a support team you can reach in Malaysian working hours. Price matters, but check these five things first, because moving a site later costs more than the saving.
Why does hosting speed matter for a business website?
Every page starts with the server. Google's web.dev guide uses Time to First Byte (TTFB), the wait before the server starts sending a page, and gives a rough target of 0.8 seconds or less. Above 1.8 seconds counts as poor. A slow server makes every page slow, however well the site is designed.
Ask the host what storage the servers use (NVMe or SSD), where the servers sit, and whether caching is set up for WordPress. Then test a site already on that host with Google PageSpeed Insights.
What should a hosting plan include?
- Daily backups kept for at least a week, and a simple way to restore one. Ask who does the restore and whether it costs extra.
- Free SSL that renews automatically. Let's Encrypt will shorten its certificates to 64 days from 10 February 2027, so manual renewals will come round more often.
- Business email on your own domain, or a clear price if email is separate.
- A web firewall and malware scanning, which help when a plugin on your site has a security hole.
- cPanel or a similar control panel, so you are not stuck with one company's tools.
What happens at renewal?
Many plans look cheap in year one and renew at a higher price. Read the renewal price as well as the first-year offer. Check that you can download a full copy of your site and email at any time, and that the domain is registered in your company's name, not the host's.
Who answers when the site goes down?
Find out the support hours in Malaysia time, whether you get a person on WhatsApp or phone, and how fast they reply. A ticket system that answers overnight from another time zone is slow when your shop is down during the day.
What to do
- Write down what you need now: the number of email accounts, the size of the site, and whether you sell online.
- Ask two or three hosts the questions above and get the answers in writing.
- Test the speed of a site they already host.
- Before you move, take a full backup of your current site and mailboxes.
