Chrome 156 fixes 52 security flaws: restart to update
- Chrome updates
Google released Chrome 156 for Windows, Mac and Linux on 27 October 2026 (version 156.0.8078.73 or .74). It fixes 52 security flaws, and Google rates four of them critical. Microsoft released an Edge security update the same day. Anyone in your office using Chrome or Edge should restart the browser so the update can install.
What was fixed?
The four critical flaws are in parts of Chrome that handle files, page layout and graphics. Many of the other fixes are rated high. Google usually keeps the technical details private until most people have updated.
Microsoft listed a flaw in Edge, CVE-2026-62765, that could let an attacker run code on a computer over the network. Microsoft rates it Important. Google and Microsoft have not said that any of these flaws are being used in attacks.
Chrome for Android version 156 is rolling out on Google Play over the next few days. Google says it carries the same security fixes as the desktop version.
Why does a restart matter?
Chrome and Edge download updates by themselves, but the new version only runs after the browser is closed and opened again. A browser left open for days keeps running the old version until someone restarts it.
What to do
- In Chrome, click the three dots at the top right, then Help > About Google Chrome. Wait for the check to finish and click Relaunch. The version should read 156.0.8078.73 or higher.
- In Edge, open the three dots menu, then Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge, and restart when asked.
- On Android phones, open Google Play and update Chrome when version 156 appears.
- Ask staff to save their work and restart the browser before they go home today.
- If a computer shows an old version and will not update, it may be blocked by company settings or an old Windows version. Have someone check it.
