WordPress plans AI assistant access for version 7.3

WordPress plans AI assistant access for version 7.3

The WordPress AI team published a plan on 28 October 2026 to let site owners connect their own AI assistant, such as ChatGPT or Claude, to their WordPress site. You would sign in once, approve access, and then ask the assistant to do site tasks. Groundwork starts in WordPress 7.2, due in December, with the full feature aimed at 7.3. Nothing changes on your site yet.

How would it work?

The team describes a simple flow. You tell your AI assistant you want help with your website. It recognises that the site runs WordPress, shows you a link to approve access, and you log in as normal. After that, it can carry out tasks on the site for you.

To get there, the plan has four parts:

  • MCP, a common standard that AI tools use to talk to other software. WordPress already has an MCP Adapter plugin, and the team wants to bring it into WordPress itself.
  • A starting set of "Abilities", the actions an assistant is allowed to take, such as everyday site management jobs.
  • A proper sign-in using OAuth, the same kind of "allow this app" screen you see when you log in to a website with Google. Today people often have to create an Application Password and paste it into the AI tool.
  • One simple screen to see which assistants have access and to remove them.

The team says security review is a priority and that inclusion in WordPress 7.3 depends on the work being ready.

What this means for you

  1. Nothing to do today. It is only a plan so far.
  2. Until the safe sign-in arrives, do not paste your WordPress admin password or an Application Password into ChatGPT, Claude or any other chat tool. Anyone who sees that text could control your site.
  3. If someone already connected an AI tool or plugin to your site, check Users > Profile > Application Passwords and remove any you do not recognise.
  4. When this does arrive, give an assistant the lowest access it needs, the same way you would for a new staff member.
