WebMCP: how AI agents may fill in your website's forms

WebMCP is a new feature being tested in Chrome and Edge. It lets a website tell the AI assistant in a visitor's browser which actions it offers, such as "send a message" or "search products", so the assistant can use them without guessing where to type. Elementor says it will add support. Nothing is needed from most site owners yet, but it is worth knowing about.

What is WebMCP?

Today, when someone asks an AI assistant to send an enquiry through your contact form, the assistant has to read the page like a person and find the right boxes. That often fails. With WebMCP, the site lists a few clear actions, each with a short description and the details it needs, and the assistant calls them directly in the visitor's browser, using the visitor's own login.

According to Elementor, Chrome and Edge both run a trial of WebMCP until 30 March 2027, and only sites that sign up for the trial can use it for real visitors. Google's Lighthouse page checker now looks for WebMCP tools on a page.

Is it ready?

Not yet. Elementor lists the open questions:

  • The technical details are still changing.
  • WebKit, which runs Safari and almost every browser on an iPhone, has raised concerns, so iPhone visitors may not get it.
  • AI assistants do not yet use these tools as a matter of course.
  • Security is unsolved. A harmful review or comment on a page could try to trick an assistant into doing something the visitor did not want.

Elementor says its 4.4 beta adds an "Agent Ready" menu with read-only WebMCP tools, an llms.txt file and plain-text versions of pages, and that its forms will follow.

What this means for you

For now, the best way to be ready for AI assistants is the same as for search: clear pages, forms that work, and correct business details. Our post on which AI agents visit your website covers the reading side.

What to do

  1. Do not add test code to your live site yourself. Wait for your page builder or form plugin to support it.
  2. Keep WordPress, Elementor and your form plugin updated, so new features arrive safely.
  3. Check your contact form works on phone and computer, and gives a clear thank-you message.
  4. If you try WebMCP, Elementor advises starting with read-only actions and keeping anything that sends or buys behind a human confirmation.
